Clicker Gundog Foundation Workshop

Would you like to harness your pet dog’s instinctive gundog skills or maybe you are already a gundog handler who would like to learn different training approaches with a new or young dog? If so, this workshop is for you.

Widget's Farm is really excited to host a specialist workshop with Helen Phillips, author of Clicker Gundog and owner of the Gundog Training Centre in Worcestershire.

Helen Phillips, with her team of Hungarian Vizslas, has worked dogs in the field for over 30 years and covers a range of different types of shoots from large commercial events to rough shooting. Helen has Distinction in the Certificate in Canine Training and Behaviour and teaches on the same course at Warwickshire College as well as teaching gundog courses around the world. She is author of the popular Clicker Gundog training book, and is an active assessor for the Learning About Dogs Clicker Trainers’ Competency Assessment Programme, and an instructor for The Gundog Club.

This workshop is suitable for handlers with no experience or for handlers with puppies and older dogs with no experience.  The workshop will cover introduction to the foundation gundog skills including recall, stop, connection and relationship, retrieve, hunting and play. The use and value of targets will also be covered. The principles of reinforcement will be discussed and focus will be on developing high value reinforcers that can be used to strengthen the behaviours.  Your dog doesn’t need any skills but having trained in a group of some sort before may be advantageous, as would being introduced to clicker training but it's not essential.

Whether you are a pet dog owner or plan to actually work your gundog one day, harnessing your dogs innate gundog skills will add a huge amount of joy to your relationship and an oulet for your pup’s natural behaviours. As a pet dog owner, you can gain the thrill to see your dog excitedly searching and retrieving objects under control.  As a serious gundog handler, you can develop dogs which work calmly and confidently on shoots without the fallout of punishing, old-fashioned training approaches.
